It was always pleasant to start my day with a visit from the local mailpony. It helped that sometimes that involved waking up next to her rather than going down to answer the door, though today it was the latter. The “friends with benefits” arrangement that we got into after our first liaison had been something neither of us had yet seen a reason to change even as it had become a bit more uncommon as an increase in workload based on the season and more survey requests for the Crown took up more of our time. So as much as I would have wished otherwise, this was simply a business call as she dropped off my mail and we exchanged some pleasantries before she took off and made her way toward her next delivery. Shutting the door behind me, I saw the usual suspects. A banknote to be redeemed at the local bank for my salary, a notice of a town hall meeting, and surprisingly a handwritten letter. As diverse as nearby Ponyville had become in recent years it was still primarily a pony town.

Intrigued, I set the other two aside and opened the letter. My curiosity quickly turned to a budding sense of panic as I was once again greeted by something I was always hoping would someday just stop.

With the increase in gryphons of various colorations in the nearby town, it’s usually surprisingly easy to get away with my hunts without getting hunted down myself afterward, in particular with the assistance of most of the “victims” not being too keen to publicly announce their state. As one would then expect, it was rather disconcerting to say the least to receive a letter that was making clear that the sender knew exactly how I was supplementing my diet, and was requesting that I meet them at their home in Ponyville.

Now, it’s not as if the Crown employs secret police or anything like that, the Royal Guard being rather up–front and obvious about everything they do with their gold armor and weapons. That being said, letters like this naturally make me nervous about the possibility of encountering some more clandestine employee of the Royal Sisters and getting tossed in a small cage somewhere deep underground. I had to force myself to close my eyes, take a deep breath, and remember how the last few of these had gone. So far they hadn’t been precursors to imprisonment so it stood to reason this might be another individual clandestinely requesting my “assistance”.

It was with that possibility in mind that I packed up a few items in my saddlebags and set out. Making sure the door was locked, I instead launched myself out of my window as usual and swept up into the midday sky, gentle breeze giving me a much-welcome boost as I climbed just above the treetops and made my way into town. It always struck me how much busier this place was than when I first set up a home here, other gryphons, hippogriffs, and many other species besides seeming to happily commingle in this place. I sometimes found myself wondering if I would have developed my peculiar hunting technique if I’d been raised in a place and time like this where being a partial carnivore didn’t get me looked at like a threat. For today, that was neither here nor there. Someone in this town was either calling for my help, or about to fall victim to one of my new toys that I’d packed and then missing some cherished body parts.

With renewed confidence, I landed outside the fence and took in the home of my mysterious letter-writer. It was a modest two-story setup, nice garden in the front, honestly somewhat unassuming aside from being a bit bigger than the others on the street which made sense for a creature that could fly and would at least need some space to be able to stretch out and be comfortable. I didn’t really get any hints about their identity from standing outside, and eventually it was just going to seem weird that I was standing here staring, so I swallowed my nervousness and passed through the gate to make the short walk to the door and knock.

By this point I could feel myself starting to relax. So far there’d been not a single hint that this dragon had any erstwhile intentions, and I was starting to suspect a different motive entirely. The way he was being so friendly had disarmed me a little at first, but now that I was getting a better look at his body language I could see small tells starting to evince themselves. His tail tip tapping quietly was a more obvious ones, but as he described his home to me I could tell he was babbling out of nervousness. Except it wasn’t.
