The term Bots in League of Legends refers to the computer-controlled players (AI: Artificial Intelligence) available in non-Ranked games (e.g. custom, Co-op vs. AI, etc.). The difficulty of the bot AI in
Summoner's Rift can be (from low-to-high) "Intro", "Beginner" or "Intermediate"; there is similar modularity to serve the other PvE modes. Some bot champions cannot be chosen in custom games, but they are available in Co-op vs. AI.

As of January 2025, new and returning players may experience some bots filling their lobby for a number of Normal games, as part of a period of preparation and skill level calibration. Players that do not fit these criteria but are matched alongside ones that do, will also experience those bots in the lobby.

On January 24, 2012, it was announced that the bot system would be expanded with more bots, better intelligence and availability on the Crystal Scar. On February 1, 2012, the system was released.[1]

In V14.6, a major overhaul for bots was released, after Riot created an entirely new framework for bots to be developed in and function using more nuanced definitions and decision-making algorithms. In V14.12, these upgrades were also applied to Custom games.[4][5]

In V14.18, a bot trial was launched in Normal game queues to help ease new and reviving accounts back into playing games. In V14.22, this system was applied to ARAM matches as well. As of patch V25.S1.3, Riot have made no further comments and this mechanism is presumed still active.

As of V11.3 bots build items based off of the recommended items tab, which is a system that updates as players build differently. Historically bots had a set build path and would buy the same items every game.
