Hey guys! After my last article, recapping my Top 8 finish at Portland, I was able to place in the Top 8 again, this time at NAIC! Ending my season with back-to-back Cuts felt great, and catapulted me to the top of the leaderboards to get stipends for Worlds and probably LAIC as well, so overall I’m super excited and hope to continue the momentum into Worlds.

Back to my NAIC run – I ended up playing the new Marnie’s Grimmsnarl archetype, which I discussed how to play against as Gardy last time, but I was not considering it as a play at that point. So what changed?

Leading up to the event, I was pretty dead set on playing Dragapult Dusknoir, however while some of my friends and I were testing the deck, I watched Raz Wolpe destroy our current PultNoir list with his Grimmsnarl build. At that point Raz was playing heavy Poffin, a PokeGear, and a Fezandipiti ex, which made the deck look super smooth, contrary to my early testing with it. Since we lost to the deck, I asked him for his list so we had a better list to practice against, and that is where I got the start to my final list, which I will discuss more later.

I started playing a bit more Grimmsnarl with everyone, as I am pretty fond of spread decks, so I figured learning the deck as a backup pick was a good idea. Soon, I got to New Orleans, and tested the PultNoir versus Grimmsnarl matchup more, as we were getting a bit worried about it. We went like 0-8, and that got us very scared about playing PultNoir, and a bit desperate on what to play. As my group kept trying to optimize PultNoir, I was playing Grimmsnarl into people who wanted to play the matchup, and I was drawing super well, beating bad matchups like Eevee Box and Joltik, and finding really good lines despite poor prizes like both Grimmsnarl ex or TM: Evolutions. I also really liked how self-sufficient and consistent the deck is, as consistency was something many lists were lacking. The consistency, along with me assuming I would play better than most of my opponents (at least in Day 1), meant I would be at a significant advantage, which really drew me to the deck.

After tons of testing, it is 11 pm Thursday night, so I play a bit of mirror match to figure out the best route, and while Bodhi had just built a super-consistent PultNoir list, I figured my time would be better spent getting a good sleep and playing Grimmsnarl, rather than trying to learn or optimize the new build, and be super tired the next day. Obviously, both options were good, since Bodhi and I both made Top Cut.

As I mentioned earlier, Raz was playing a Fezandipiti ex, however as I played games with the card, I felt like I ran into one of two problems. On the one hand, there were many boards where I simply did not have the bench space for Fezandipiti, so it did not help, and on the flip side, there were some boards where I could bench it, but doing so lost me the game, or gave my opponent better winning odds. With this in mind, I decided that the niche situations where Fez was good would not outweigh the games I lost to from starting it. This meant I wanted to find additional consistency to make up for the lack of Fez.

Right before the event, I was discussing with Raz the changes he had made since he last spoke, and he told me that his group had cut PokeGear for third Boss. I was not a fan of this change, since I was rarely using two Boss in a game. Additionally, I was not having too much of an issue with finding them when I needed with Secret Box, so I figured three would be a bit too clunky. This is where PokeGear comes in. Not only can it bail you out of a hand with a Research or Iono, but it improves your chances of finding a Boss. A play I have also discussed a lot with the card, is if you have a strong opening hand to evolve without an Item from Arven-searching, but no Supporter for next turn, you can Arven for PokeGear and TM: Evo. Normally, these kinds of situations would force you to Arven for Secret Box to stay in the game, but now you can save your Box for a more impactful combo in the mid- to late-game, as with your draw for turn and plenty of draw Supporters in the deck, you have good odds to get out of the dead hand.

The main change I wish I had made before the event was cutting Budew for a fourth Munkidori. I got really low value out of Budew due to the absurd amount of Munkidoris in the meta, and lost many games to starting it. The fourth Munkidori also puts less strain on recovery, and reduces variance to prizing, so overall I think it is a very strong inclusion.

That is pretty much everything worth talking about; the list is very vanilla, focusing mostly on consistency. The only other thing is that with the new set coming out before Worlds, I think Air Balloon is better than Rescue Board, as it makes your Grimmsnarls more mobile, letting you play around Mind Bend confusion easier.

Both of these games went exactly as I wanted. My opponent opted to go first in both games, which while correct in Game 1, they should have adjusted for Game 2. Grimmsnarl wants to go second against everything I found. Since I was going second both games, I was able to TM: Evo into Froslass immediately, and start pressuring the Bolt’s board. With Froslass set up, it is just a matter of chaining two or three Grimmsnarls to take your prizes. You usually only need the third one if they are able to get a high value Turo’s, or discard a ton of damage with an Area Zero bump. I was luckily able to keep pace quite well, so my opponent was on an odd prize map, and I was able to use two Grimmsnarl attacks, taking three prizes from Froslass damage each time. Something to note is that the excess damage on your board typically does not matter, so if you can, move less to avoid taking the knockout on your turn, instead taking the KO in between turns with Freezing Shroud. This avoids activating Fez, and as you will typically use this tactic on an Ogerpon with three Grass, it can hinder their ability to make a response.

I was pretty scared in both of these games as I drew pretty poorly, but my opponent made a lot of mistakes with their bench, whereas I limited my board to Grimmsnarls, Munkidoris, and Shaymin. This meant that despite going down two prizes early in Game 1, I was able to make a comeback with Ionos, and the fact my opponent had a really weak board. In Game 2, my opponent did not have as much pressure as Game 1, so the poor draws were not really punished, and I once again set up the Froslass-less board. Since my list was more consistent, I was able to set up more Munkidoris than them.

R3 Gardevoir Espathra WW
I did not test against this build of Gardy, so I just targeted the Flittle when I could, and it worked out pretty well. In Game 1, I went for a Froslass strategy, and my opponent almost made a comeback since I played a bit greedy and went to one prize. However their line forced them to attack with a Scream Tail with 80 damage, then I was able to use their Artazon to grab Budew and Itchy Pollen for game. In Game 2 they had a pretty slow start, so I was able to chase down Ralts and Kirlias and get super far ahead before I was being pressured. Overall, against Gardy builds like this, Froslass is pretty strong, and the Espathra was surprisingly very weak, especially since they need to damage it quite a bit to knock out a Grimmsnarl, and with Froslass and Munkidoris, it could be fairly easily dealt with TM: Devo.

This Grimmsnarl mirror set was a little close for comfort. My opponent’s list was less consistent than mine and did not play Shaymin, so I was able to pile up much more damage than them in Games 2 and 3. In Game 1, however, I prized Shaymin and Devo, making my life pretty difficult, and my opponent drew out of late-game Ionos. Anyhow, Shaymin is a really big factor in the mirror. If both players set up a ton of Munkis, Shaymin is really weak. However, typically the game does not play out like this, so with only one or two Munki, you cannot heal a lot, so preventing the extra 30 with Shaymin is really good. In this set, my opponent left a lot of excess damage on my Grimmsnarls which opened up a ton of lines for me, and I was able to capitalize.

In this set, I played against a Japanese player with their unique build playing four Munkidori and Shaymin, which disadvantaged me heavily. In Game 1, my opponent set up quad Munki, so I scooped pretty quick. In Game 2, I set up three Munki and ran over them, leaving plenty of time for Game 3. I drew pretty rough, and my board was strictly worse than my opponent’s, however I got to a place where my opponent could whiff Devo for two turns and I could win, which somehow they did! I definitely got really lucky here, but that is the game.

My opponent blinded second for Game 1, because they thought I was playing Gardy, which I thought was hilarious. Anyhow, I was able to set up pretty well in Game 1 and establish the typical board state of Grimmsnarl, Morgrem, Munkidori, Froslass and Shaymin. In Game 2, my opponent once again opted second, but they pretty much full-bricked so I got a pretty quick win.

In this set I played against Ryuki, who was on a double-Munkidori list. This made things pretty tricky, as my damage was less permanent and my Munkidoris were under pressure even without Froslass in play. In Game 1, I was unable to set up any Froslass, so I could not make any Devo plays in the late-game, and I ended up losing as my opponent was able to find Neo Upper at the perfect time. For Game 2, I set up the typical Froslass strat to ping their Drakloaks, which allowed me to have stronger late game options and win. In Game 3 I got griefed early by a Turn-1 Jamming and had some rough draws, but I got the game to a board state where time was going to be called soon, so I had two options. The first was to play aggressively for a win, but I would have higher odds to lose, or take a safer line that I would not be able to win in the few turns I had left, but it would be really difficult to lose. As time was winding down, I felt pretty rushed and ended up playing the aggressive line, which in hindsight was probably lower value.

I am pretty sure this matchup is really good, but the first two games looked really close, so maybe not. In Game 1, I started Budew, which let their Cyndaquil/Quilava knock me out, then I had a dead hand off Iono, so they were on even prizes. Once I finally started attacking, they were able to Quick Search for Gravity Mountain, so I Iono’ed to two and they found another one, so I lost. In Game 2 I started Shaymin, so I thought the same thing was going to happen as Game 1, but luckily I did not fall behind a turn, and cooked up a line where I left their Gravity Mountain in play so my Morgrem could knock out their Typhlosion. This meant I could not lose to whiffing Grimmsnarl off Iono, and we had a Game 3 where they drew pretty egregiously.

Here I hit my friend Bodhi, and we had an awful Game 1 where we both made multiple misplays, and I ultimately lost to a combination of those, plus starting Budew, plus whiffing for two turns in the late-game. Game 2 was a full brick on my end.

In this set I was paired against Azul, and was forced into an aggressive strategy both games. In Game 1, I noticed I prized both my Counter Catchers, so I decided that playing from behind, which I typically like to do, was not a viable strategy. Luckily, I was able to piece together a Turn-2 Candy Grimmsnarl going first, and Azul stumbled a bit in the early game, so I was able to get far enough ahead to win pretty convincingly. In Game 2, I was once again going first, but Azul’s Turn 1 was very weak, so I went aggressive again since my hand allowed it. While this game was much closer, I was able to squeak it out despite him having the fourth Munkidori.

My opponent played this set somewhat poorly. In Game 1 they played really aggressively, using Moss Agate at the first possible time. This left them with a Flareon in play with no energy, which I was able to gust, Iono, and Itchy Pollen many times. With this, even though my opponent was able to Moss Agate multiple times, once I dealt with the Leafeon, there were very few threats, so I was able to close out the game. In Game 2, I had a solid start where I was able to Evo into Morgrem and Froslass, but I did not realize my opponent was playing Wellspring Mask Ogerpon, so they were able to take a double-knockout on my turn. This board looked pretty doomed, however my opponent had evolved both their Hoothoots to piece together the play, and their Eevee ex was taking damage from Froslass. Due to their weak board, I went Iono and Itchy Pollen to buy a ton of time and reestablish my board, this time with Shaymin. From there, my opponent’s deck stopped functioning, so I won shortly thereafter.

This set was pretty odd, as I was playing as if my opponent was playing Dragapult, since they did not show a Charmander until Turn 3 or 4. Their TM: Evo let them set up really well on Game 1, and a whiff on my end prevented me from putting on pressure, so they were able to establish Munki, and the game started to get out of hand. In Game 2, things went a bit better for me, but I mostly got bailed out by them committing a Luminous early, and prizing two more, making it really difficult for them to attack with Dragapult. With this, my opponent scooped pretty quickly, leaving us plenty of time for Game 3. I do not remember the details of this game except that I used Iono, and I needed to draw Boss off three of my last four prizes, and have my opponent whiff the hand disrupt. Luckily, the stars aligned, and I was able to get myself to a win-and-in to Top Cut.

If you want to watch this game in full, it was streamed. I was pretty nervous going into this match, because despite it being a good matchup on paper, I was playing against Henry Chao, who I knew beat Tim Franklin on Grimmsnarl earlier. I had a game plan for the matchup not to set up Froslass unless I was ahead, and try to attack with Morgrem early to play around Mind Bend value. I forgot this second part in Game 1, and due to a few other small misplays, such as using Artazon for a Munkidori instead of Shaymin, where I think I just spaced out, I ended up losing this game. Going into Game 2, I actually adapted my strategy, and it worked better, but I still had to play into Mind Bend. I decided that even if I flipped tails, I was not in a super bad spot, and if I flipped heads, I was winning faster, which was really important since we burned about half our time in Game 1. In Game 3, I got off to a super aggressive start, and Henry was struggling to evolve his Ralts/Kirlias. Ultimately, in our flurry of plays, Henry accidentally attacked with Lillie’s Clefairy instead of Scream Tail, allowing me to get too far ahead for him to really do anything, then I closed out the set with a Boss on Gardy.

I think this match was really interesting because you can see our visible shift of pace of play in Games 2 and 3, as we did not want to tie. An important concept in the game is deciding whether sacrificing your accuracy for speed is worth it, as you have worse odds of winning, but you can actually win in time. As seen in this set, the lowered accuracy ended up losing Henry the game, however with how the matchup plays out, and the Gentleman’s Agreement we had in place, if he played the game out in a more methodical approach, I may have been too far ahead at the end of time.

In both of these games I went first, which was not what I was hoping for, but I could make it work. As I was looking at my opening hand I saw Shaymin and no basic outs, and I am so scared that I will get donked. Off my top deck, I get blessed with a Nest Ball, and do not instantly lose. My opponent was unable to get a Turn-1 knockout on my Shaymin anyways, due to its 80 HP keeping it out of Fan Rotom range, but it was definitely scary. As the game progresses, I do not get a chance to TM: Evo, which leads to me whiffing Froslass for a turn too many, and getting punished by a Turo’s. At this point, my opponent and I both had two prizes left, but I did not have a Candy Grimmsnarl combo, so I flexed into a one-prize board, and just chilled for a turn, figuring if they disrupted me it would probably be with Judge. Alas, they played Iono, and my Arven + Night Stretcher not only went to the bottom, but I only got two cards. I used the Spikemuth in play to shuffle my deck, and slam Research into around 13 cards. I need to draw Rare Candy and Stretcher, and not my last two Darks. I got there. That game was a bit close for comfort, and I definitely got a bit lucky at the end, so I am a little nervous going into Game 2. Once again scared of a donk, I see a Poffin in my opening hand and breathe a sigh of relief. Then my opponent does basically nothing on their turn, and I quickly put together the win.

I was ecstatic heading into Top 8, as this was my first cut at a Masters IC, but unfortunately my happiness was cut short when I opened lone Budew with no Basic searchers, and Isaiah opened Scream Tail to donk me. (Donked by Gardy… that is a first.) My mental is so chalked going into Game 2, especially when the only Supporter in my hand is Research, and I see a Stretcher and Super Rod. While the Gardy matchup may be favored, recovery cards are super important, and you typically need all three of them to win a game where you both set up. Anyhow, I had a decent enough start despite that, so I was able to keep up, then I top-decked an Iono and was able to conserve my resources. Eventually I was able to set up triple-Munkidori and closed out that game super quickly. In Game 3, it is the same as Game 1, just with a Snorunt instead of Budew. On the next turn I found a Budew to Itchy Pollen, but Isaiah was able to find double Kirlia, so it is looking pretty bad. I top-deck Secret Box but it is just too late at this point. I can set up my board a bit, but with the double Kirlia, I was just too far behind, and the game slowly got out of control.

Future Thoughts 未来思考
I am incredibly proud of my Top 8 finish considering how uncertain I was about what to play in the days leading up to the event. The Grimmsnarl archetype was super enjoyable to play, and I think it is very strong heading forward. Not much changes with the new Black and White set, and Gardy should be increasing in popularity, which sounds great for the deck. Something I want to try is a no-Froslass aggro build, with three or four Rare Candies, maybe a Pidgeot line, and the new Archeops. The Archeops is really interesting against something like Dragapult, effectively allowing you to Devo a Pult and knock out the Drakloak with energies. This may be a bit gimmicky overall, but with the decline in Budew, it could be an option.

Other than that, I mentioned the Air Balloon addition earlier, but there is not much else I have seen. The deck was played by great Japanese players like Yoshiyuki at their Nationals, so the deck is a force to be reckoned with at Worlds.
