Assessment Overview | You are required to prepare a 3-slide presentation and deliver it orally in 5 minutes followed by a 7-min conversation for questions and answers with instructor the day of your oral exam. There is no need to go beyond the 3 slides. You are not required to include a reference list for this assessment. | |
The oral assessment has been growing in popularity across higher education, as it is viewed as an authentic, secure, and versatile means of measuring students’ competence. We want this assessment experience to be stress-free, and you should view it as an ‘evaluative conversation’.

We will assess your ability to apply at least one (at most two) new economies framework(s) to a real-world scenario, that you did not discuss in your essay. You should demonstrate your creativity and innovation in relation to the potential legal approaches (policy or agency reforms, enterprise structures, etc.) that would enable, promote and advance urban sustainability and new economies.

Based on the course content, encompassing all class materials, prepare a 5-minute oral presentation of a real case, anywhere around the world, which is locally specific (happening in a city/country), and globally relevant (able to be extrapolated, adapted, and offer lessons for other contexts in its wider region at any scale). Your presentation should:

You can use a maximum of 3 slides as visual or text aids for your oral presentation. You will be evaluated in your ability to present your already incorporated knowledge and critically assess the case study that you selected. As a guide, you can use a slide for each point of the task. Please do not read a script.

7-minute conversation

This gives an opportunity for 1-3 follow up questions. The principal aim of these questions will be for clarification purposes, for you to provide any additional information, and for you to demonstrate responsiveness and/or thoughtfulness in relation to the question. Please note we will not be assessing your language ability, and we are aware that English is a second language for many. It is fine for you to ask us to repeat or clarify any question you are asked.

3-minute instructor’s feedback

The instructor will provide immediate feedback on how the presentation and conversation were conducted and will focus on highlighting the strongest part and providing suggestions and/or tips for strengthening any weak points.

The oral assessment session will be recorded on Teams for later reference to ensure comparability and accuracy of grading.

Oral assessments will take place in person on campus (exact location to be determined) and scheduled by individual appointments between Aug 4 – Aug 15.

No devices can be used during the oral assessment, and no notes. Slides will all be sent to the instructor in advance by 1 August 2025, and you will present these slides to the instructor the day of your oral assessment.
