Chapter Text

Seonghwa has only had his voice stolen from him once before meeting the irritating captain of the Black Mist.

It was centuries ago, when he was still in his first life, ignorant to the curse that kept him immortal.

Night had fallen and it was time for sirens to hunt. No sailor knew that sirens lurked in the Neveah Sea, for those who had learned became a siren’s play thing before their heart became a trophy. Sirens didn’t hunt in groups, nor in pairs. They were independent creatures from birth. Their parents only remained with them for a few months, until they were half way full grown. Seonghwa had hunted hundreds of times before, and the night had been no different.

In the Neveah Sea, where the water was peaceful and alluring, there were always sailors.

They were all victims of the surface beauty of the ocean and the fake assurance that you could see through the clear water. When the moon rose, the water became a mere void to those who looked above the surface. Below, it was as clear as it always was, so it was never hard to spot a swimming sailor or a ship passing through.

They always hunted for the fish in the ocean, their meat the freshest of all seas. So, Seonghwa always knew his next trophy would be throwing nets into the water. They never knew that sirens lurked near as they tossed the nets in and siren’s never let themselves glow unless it was a singular, small boat.

So when he felt the net fall around him, capturing him, he didn’t understand how the sailor had managed to find him.

Entangled in the net, he thrashed and ripped into the netting only to find it to no avail. Whatever the net was made of was so strong the siren couldn’t rip into it with his sharp nails or teeth. As the net pulled him above water, he could hear the jeering of the sailors. As if they had been targeting him.

Seonghwa hissed, moving in the net and glaring at the sailors below. It didn’t take long for him to hum his enchanting melody, so sweet that the sailors immediately quieted, the one who had been hoisting the net up began to let go before Seonghwa felt a crushing sensation on his head and he screeched as he held to his head tightly, the pain so unbearable.

He looked before him and snarled when he saw a man chanting words in their language, an item in hand. He squinted and furrowed his brows when he saw his necklace, laced with pearls and a dangling shell, in his hands. He didn’t think to care much for how the man got his necklace, not when he was on the verge of being captured.

Seonghwa tried to claw at the net again but he felt so weak, the crushing sensation in his head taking out all of his fight. He let out pleading calls towards the other sirens. They might respond to his plea, but he fears he will be gone by then.

“No.” He hisses quietly as he holds tightly to the net and it seems one of the sailors below here, eyes widening.

“Capt! It speaks!” They have a heavy accent that Seonghwa will never be able to place. He stares at the man who the sailor regarded as “capt.” The man standing, the man who was holding the necklace. He held an evil grin and Seonghwa hissed with a wince before he felt his breath catch in his throat–daring to leave him.

It was when the captain said the damned words that Seonghwa felt it being ripped from him. He could feel the way his song left his body and saw it drift into the necklace the captain held.

And just like that, he had lost his song for the first time.

– – –

When Seonghwa woke up, he jolted, hitting his head on glass and he groaned. He couldn’t move—barely at least. He looked around, his gaze hazy as he noted the wooden interior that he recognized from the sunken ships in his sea.

He looked over to hear muffled voices and his eyes narrowed with a hiss when he saw the men that captured him.

“Such a prett’ lil thing, hm?” The man he recognizes as the “capt'' squats with his hands on his knees, “‘M sure ya don’t mind that I gotchur lil voice, do ya?”

Seonghwa keeps his gaze narrowed when the man holds out his necklace. He can’t understand how the man got his hands on something he thought he’d lost forever. The necklace belonged to his brother. He isn’t sure what the man is trying to say. His accent is so foreign and heavy. It sounds nothing like the language of the land he heard from other sailors.

The man tilts his head, “Do ya even understand? One o’ my men says you speak. C’mon now, speak for me now darlin’.”

Seonghwa can’t even move in whatever they have him locked in. He feels so weak and helpless, nothing like the powerful creature he had once been. He feels so empty without his song. His eyes fall to the necklace that holds his voice once more, sorrow filling him. Seonghwa doesn’t know how the man stole his voice. He had never heard of such a thing. His mind drifts to when someone offered him a way to save his brother. He’d been involved with some ritual and the witch had only said she needed some of his blood, and in return, they would save his brother from the humans that captured him. He remembers watching as the witch took hold of a trident, chanting with it floating between her and the few other witches she brought. He feels foolish now that he thinks the ritual was a part of something bigger. His blood had been used for more than a “small spell” as she had described it.

“Hey. I said speak.” The man says with a snarl and Seonghwa looks at him before hissing. The man scowls and looks at the necklace, “Why don’t this damn thing work?”

When the man throws the necklace to the floor in anger, Seonghwa lets out a weak sound as he feels the way the impact of the ground hurts his song—hurts him. The man’s lips curl into a grin and Seonghwa hates how weak he must seem.

“So, if I throw this thing,” the man walks over to pick the necklace up again and throws it to the floor again. Seonghwa tries to curl into himself in the pain, “You hurt too.” The man laughs and Seonghwa wraps his arms around himself as best he can in the ill fitting container they shoved him in.

“Gorgeous.” He says wickedly and Seonghwa turns his head away from him. He feels pain bloom at his throat and he knows the man throws the necklace again.

“Look at me, monster.” Seonghwa doesn’t turn his head and the man now slams the necklace against the floor under his hand. Seonghwa bites down his cry.

“I would rather die than entertain you.” Seonghwa says and that seems to make the man either entirely too giddy or angry. The land language is heavy on his tongue and rolls unnaturally. Seonghwa doesn’t know much of the land tongue, but he’s picked up enough overhearing sailors that he can form a long enough sentence.

“So you do speak.” The man says from where he watches Seonghwa, “Tell me what you know ‘bout Neptune’s Trident.”

Seonghwa’s eyes widen and his head turns to the man who seems eager when he can tell that the siren recognizes what he is talking about. What could this man want with a trident? Is it the one he’d seen with witches?

“Kill me.” Seonghwa bites at the pirate and the man scowls deeply as he sits silent for a little before his hand moves to his side and he pulls out a dagger. Seonghwa watches as he takes the dagger to the necklace and slices at it, fraying its string. Seonghwa cries out the pain and he can feel the way a few of his scales had been ripped from him, bloodying the water. He shakes at the pain inflicted on his tail and the man seems delighted.

“Now, darlin’, tell me what you know.”

– – –

Seonghwa was picked and used by the time he heard the ship rumble and the people above called out panicked orders. The ship was rocking violently and he could smell the blood before he heard the bodies fall. Exhaustion plagued his body and he felt the way his eyes began to close. He felt as if death were near and felt that he could only accept it now. He felt his song slip away from him, as if it would be gone forever and he would rather be dead than accept a life without his song.

There’s a commotion outside the doors of the room he’s locked in, people calling out in pain and the clash of swords. He hears guns go off and he knows that perhaps this is the last thing he will hear rather than the silent call of the ocean. He knows in another life, he would never let another steal his voice and abuse him. He would fight until he died. He rolls just barely, his eyes rolling up as he feels a wave of power surge him before he’s seeing black.

And all he does is accept his pathetic death.

– – –

When he’d woken that day, he found himself back in the ocean, the glass container he was in broken.

When he feels his consciousness return to him fully, he begins to recognize the power surging in him. He glances down at what he can see of his tail and body. Fully healed. He feels relief take over him as he realizes that he had his song back. He was still the siren he knew—not what those filthy pirates had made out of him.

He pushes himself out of the container, wincing as his tail sways under him. His muscles and body were so sore from being shoved in such an ill-fitting container. He looked around, still in that ship. It had been sunken. Somehow, someone had attacked the ship he was on and he had sunk down with it.

He’s not sure how he’s gotten his song back; he supposes the man who had taken it might have died if the ship had sunk to the bottom of the sea.

He swims through the sunken ship, not glancing at the dead bodies that no longer float, too much water in their lungs to remain buoyant. When he reaches the vast expanse of the sea, he sighs, shutting his eyes as he embraces the freedom.

He glances down at the wrecked ship and immediately thinks to find that man and the necklace that he had used to abuse Seonghwa. He searches the ship lividly, turning over everything and leaving nothing undisturbed. Yet, he cannot find the necklace. He had found the body of the captain, searched every inch before tearing his dead body apart in anger.

The thing that would lock him up again was somewhere unknown. He was now a siren with a weakness like no other—people could take his song as long as they held that necklace. They could use and hurt him with such a small item, and he was utterly powerless against it.

He spent years after, searching for the lost necklace. But it was to no avail. The sea offered no whispers of its whereabouts, but it told him of his curse. He was forever bound to the trident known as Neptune’s Trident.

As long as that Trident remained, so would he, no matter how many times he died. No matter how many times his song was stolen. He was forever bound to the item that belonged to the sea god.

Not only that, as he soon learned that for every siren that died, their song would be fed to him. His song became the Song of the Sirens. With every siren that passed, taking a new song became harder and he became stronger. It took a mental toll, forced to relieve the siren’s death and memories before his song fused with theirs.

Maybe he was unappreciative of his growing power, but he couldn’t stand the way he began to lose himself in the hundreds of voices he took on. He wanted nothing more than to rid himself of his curse, even if it meant he died for the last time. He gathered as much as he could on Neptune’s Trident-–he learned languages and accents from across the seas and lands, but the further on land he went, the harder it became to maintain his human form. He couldn’t search for the Trident and destroy it like he hoped so eventually, he retreated back to his home in the Neveah Sea.

When Seonghwa had felt as if he were called just a few days ago, he had left his cave in the depths and looked up to see a lone ship. A gift of the sea. Approaching the sailor was easy and luring him with his song even easier, but when the man snapped out of his trance, it baffled Seonghwa before he pulled him underwater.

Having to relieve the pain of losing his voice was the last thing he had expected when he approached the man.

So now, he was stuck, locked in some prison on his ship. He was stuck in his human form too, which although usually drained much of his energy, seemed to be easier than he had thought. Maybe because his song belonged to a human now, he didn’t have to worry about returning to the sea. Or maybe it’s because he hadn’t ventured far from the sea yet, still close to home, only, he was on a ship.

The witch and the captain had left by now and he was left to his own thoughts.

The witch confirmed that he could break his curse. That he knew how to break it too. He just needed to find the trident so he could destroy it for good. His mind drifts to the captain questioning him about the trident. Hongjoong was looking for it too. Helping the captain find it might end up being in his best interest, but he has to be careful. If the captain got too close to the trident, he might lose his song forever. He doesn’t know what the witch and captain went off to discuss.

He isn’t sure if the captain knows what it takes to end Seonghwa’s curse, or if he had even known that Seonghwa was cursed in the first place. The captain, now that he thinks about it, seems to not know much about the trident and what it acquires. He hadn’t even known he’d stolen Seonghwa’s song when he’d muttered the words “your song belongs to me” in the tongue of the sea. It’s possible that the captain truly knew little to nothing, yet still pursued the trident blindly.

That could be Seonghwa’s advantage, he plots.

His eyes snap to the door of the brig as it swings open and the captain stalks in. He grins when he notices Seonghwa’s sharp eyes watching him walk and stand before the prison. The captain crosses his arms. Seonghwa expects the pirate to speak, but he remains silent. He’s observing Seonghwa, eyes jumping around his face and figure. Seonghwa refuses the urge to shift under the hard gaze and instead, opts to speak.

“What do you know about the trident?” Hongjoong’s eyes snap up to meet his and he blinks before he shifts slightly.

“Did you have a sudden change of heart?” Hongjoong counters, rather than answering Seonghwa’s question and it could confirm Seonghwa’s suspicion that the pirate really didn’t know much.

“Are you dodging my question, captain?” Seonghwa tilts his head and the captain mocks his action.

“Are you dodging mine?” Seonghwa narrows his eyes. He stares before he unfurls his legs that he’d brought to his chest and moves to stand up. He had known he had some height over the captain, but it doesn’t particularly make him feel much stronger or powerful than him. There was something about the captain’s aura that made Seonghwa tread carefully.

“I don’t think you know much about the trident.” Seonghwa says as he walks towards the bars caging him, Hongjoong not standing far behind the other side of them. He threads his hands through the bars, resting them on the slot with the padlock that kept him locked inside.

“What makes you say that?” Hongjoong doesn’t deny nor confirm Seonghwa’s suspicion.

“What items do you need to unlock the trident?” Seonghwa questions and Hongjoong is unmoving, blinking once as he thinks. Perhaps he doesn’t know that much.

“I have you.” Hongjoong says and Seonghwa scoffs.

“You must be mad to go after something and not know the cost.” Seonghwa shakes his head, surprised by the mere knowledge Hongjoong had. Seonghwa would then be able to feed him knowledge, truthful, but only enough to ensure that Hongjoong wasn’t aware that Seonghwa would break the trident when the day came that they found it.

“I would be stupid to tell you everything I know, wouldn’t I?” Hongjoong raises his brows and Seonghwa sighs, “How would I know if you lied to me or not?”

Seonghwa’s eyes drop to his song, trapped in the necklace that haunted him. He wants to know how the pirate found it. He had spent so many years searching for the necklace, only for a measly pirate to find it centuries later and use it against him.

Hongjoong doesn’t have to feel for the necklace to know that it’s what Seonghwa is staring at, “I only intend to use your voice as collateral. Should you decide to do anything reckless,” Seonghwa’s eyes raise back to Hongjoong’s, “Then I will resort to using it against you.”

“What makes you think I care for my song that much?” Seonghwa scowls and Hongjoong laughs.

“I know about your curse. You’re bound to the trident—to me, now that I have your song. Regardless of if you care for it or not.” Hongjoong speaks casually and Seonghwa’s jaw clenches. The witch must’ve told him about his curse. Which means he probably knows what it takes to break his curse which would foil his plans to manipulate the pirate to assure his own survival.

“I’d rather die than be bound to the likes of you.” Seonghwa says, repulsed with the words of the pirate. Hongjoong grins, however, despite the harsh nature of Seonghwa’s words.

“How unfortunate that you can’t.” Seonghwa swallows tightly. He hadn’t expected Hongjoong to also know that for every time he dies, he’s reborn. Forever immortal.

“I want to offer you a deal.” The pirate says when Seonghwa doesn’t bite back harsh words at him. Seonghwa raises his brows, unamused.

“What could you possibly have to offer me?” Seonghwa deadpans. Aside from Hongjoong holding his song, there is nothing that Hongjoong can offer him. As much as he would like to have his song back, he thinks it’s stupid of the pirate to use it as leverage in a deal. Clearly, the pirate had already seen that Seonghwa had no interest in helping them, even if it meant his voice being hung around the neck of someone else.

“Freedom.”
