Hello to all PokeBeach readers! Here's Gabriel again with another Pokémon TCG article, and this time I want to talk about the innovative Dragapult ex / N's Zoroark ex deck used by Stéphane Ivanoff at the North America International Championships to place 17th out of 3,812 players.

The reason I'm writing this article is because I've been working on a Dragapult / Zoroark list since before the Santiago Regionals in May, but I didn't have as much courage as Stepháne to take this new idea forward, and I didn't do all the necessary testing to use the deck in a major tournament. I did use Dragapult / Zoroark in some local tournaments and had good results, but I ended up choosing my safe option of Gardevoir ex for Santiago. I didn't do very well, so I regretted a bit not taking the risk with Dragapult / Zoroark. At that time, Destined Rivals hadn't been released yet, so there was no Shaymin and therefore N's Darmanitan was still very good.

In any case, I'm happy that a great player used the deck and achieved great results with it. It gives me a lot of confidence in the deck, and even more motivation to write an article about this new combination. At first glance it seems simple, obvious, and even a bit boring, but in practice it has a lot of advantages, especially against big metagame decks like straight Dragapult ex and Gardevoir ex. It will also be interesting to compare the list used by Stéphane with the list I was testing for Santiago, which was my last tournament of this season, because there are small differences between the two lists despite the theory being the same.

Why Dragapult with Zoroark?

In short, I see two main strong matchups for this combination in this metagame — straight Dragapult ex and Gardevoir ex — and these matchups provide most of the case for playing this deck. Against straight Dragapult, you have a faster and more consistent deck than the opponent; you draw more cards per turn and therefore you're more efficient. You evolve faster, attack faster, and waste fewer resources, since in theory you both have practically the same resources but you will be drawing 20% or 30% more cards than they will. Against Gardevoir ex, N's Zoroark ex can Knock Out Gardevoir ex with one attack, which is obviously very good and adds to your advantage.

I came up with this idea by accident back in early May. I was playing around with creating lists, and I wanted to put together a super consistent Dragapult ex deck. I wanted to draw more cards than my opponent and feel like I was playing with the old Zoroark-GX. I remember that one of the challenges I set myself was not to use Fezandipiti ex, because I felt that I was losing a lot of games due to the two easy Prizes it offers to the opponent. Ever since my article about N's Zoroark at the end of April, I've been wanting to cut Fezandipiti ex from my lists, but to do that I knew I would have to improve upon Zoroark's draw power even more.

I made some lists with different permutations of N's Zoroark ex, Dudunsparce, and Dragapult ex — that is, I put together lists for Zoroark / Dudunsparce, Zoroark / Dragapult, and Dragapult / Dudunsparce — all of them without Fezandipiti ex. In the end, N's Zoroark ex with Dragapult was the most consistent combination, not only because of the metagame issue mentioned above, but also in several other aspects that will be explained throughout the article.

This is a combination that highlights Dragapult ex's strengths, but also highlights its weaknesses. Every matchup where straight Dragapult ex struggles, Dragapult / Zoroark often struggles even more, though the trade-off is that in the matchups where straight Dragapult has an advantage, Dragapult / Zoroark will have an even stronger advantage. Matchups like Raging Bolt ex and Gholdengo ex are even more unfavorable than for straight Dragapult, but Dragapult / Zoroark has better matchups into Gardevoir ex and straight Dragapult, which I would say are two of the most important matchups in the format.

This deck is still a Dragapult ex list, but it has strong support from N's Zoroark ex, which makes me comfortable playing only two copies of Dragapult ex. Even if those two copies are in the Prizes, you have Zoroark to attack.

Unlike Stephane's list, which only uses 2-2 Zoroark, I decided to go with 3-3 in my list for a few reasons. First, I want to have a consistent chance of having two Zoroark ex on the field against Gardevoir ex, since obviously the opponent's goal will be to eliminate N's Zorua and Zoroark first and then eliminate Dragapult ex. If I'm using Zoroark, I want to be sure that I'll be able to use it consistently and effectively to make a difference in the most important matchup in the metagame. Sometimes I feel like I need two Zoroark ex to get two consecutive Knock Outs on Gardevoir ex.

Another important point is to increase the consistency of Technical Machine: Evolution's hits and also increase the deck's draw power, since, as I said before, I'm playing without Fezandipiti ex and I want my opponent to have zero chance of getting two Prizes on a 210 HP Pokémon. I believe that one of the advantages of Dragapult / Zoroark is that it only has single-Prize Pokémon, Zoroark ex (with 280 HP), and Dragapult ex (with 320 HP) on the field. It does not have easy double Prizes due to Pokémon ex like Fezandipiti ex and Latias ex.

One N's Reshiram  One N 的 Reshiram

N's Reshiram is by far the best attacker option for N's ​​Zoroark ex. The idea is that in most games you won't need to attack with Zoroark ex, since the main attacker is Dragapult ex, since its attack is far superior. The gameplay is essentially the same as a normal Dragapult ex list, but with Zoroark to help with draw power. However, it is important to always have the option to attack with Zoroark ex available, especially if the opponent deals 170 or more damage, because this way you can Knock Out any Pokémon in the format with Reshiram's Powerful Edge attack.

One Budew

Budew's effectiveness varies a lot throughout the metagame. Sometimes I feel it's impactful, and sometimes I feel it's better not to use it at all. I come out of this oscillation preferring to use just one copy, as the middle ground between investing in a second Budew and choosing to use none at all. The list is very consistent, trying to maximize the games where you can forgo Budew and use a better attack on the first turn. One thing is for sure, though: when your opponent starts the game and has a bad hand, there's nothing better than accentuating their bad luck with Itchy Pollen, allowing you to set up smoothly while they pose no threat.

One Munkidori

In my list I only use one copy of Munkidori and in Stéphane's list there are two copies, which is something I really like. However, I had difficulty setting up both at the same time, and this may be due to the difference in the lists or even just differences in our gameplay, so I decided to go back to just one copy because I'm more confident that I can use it well.

In the current format, if you see a list that doesn't use Munkidori, then find a good reason for it or start to suspect that list might not actually be good! Jokes aside, the current format is seeing more and more Munkidori in lists, and some of them don't even have a way to take advantage of the Adrena-Brain Ability beyond simple defense in spread matchups like Dragapult ex, Gardevoir ex, and Marnie's Grimmsnarl ex. In my Dragapult / Zoroark list, there is no way to generate damage for Munkidori, so it is more a form of defense, so I don't see a problem in just using one copy because in matchups where the opponent doesn't put damage on the field, like Charizard ex, Raging Bolt, and Joltik Box, Munkidori becomes useless.

One Hawlucha

This Pokémon is what often allows Dragapult ex to perform the magic of Knocking Out an opponent's Kirlia and Ralts, keeping them from setting up a new Gardevoir ex on the next turn. Basically, Hawlucha's function is to make Dragapult ex Knock Out any 70-HP Pokémon on the Bench with the effect of Phantom Dive. It also helps Dragapult ex Knock Out some super important Pokémon ex of the format such as Fezandipiti ex, Teal Mask Ogerpon ex, and Latias ex, which are otherwise 10 HP short of being Knocked Out by Phantom Dive.

One of the advantages of playing with a lot of draw power is being able to use Arven and not be punished for not having drawn new cards with Professor's Research or Iono, which makes this Supporter much better for this specific list. On the first turn, it's the best Supporter option for setup, and in the following turns, it searches out whatever combo pieces the draw power of Drakloak and Zoroark ex do not find.

Four Iono  四 Iono

Iono is a great early-game Supporter to develop your setup without losing resources, and it's also great to punish the opponent's hand in the late game. The downside of Iono is its low draw power if you have taken a lot of Prizes, but again, the high draw power provided by Zoroark ex and Drakloak corrects this and enhances this Supporter's quality for this deck.

I have an eternal struggle about whether to play Brock's Scouting or Jacq, but for this list, I like Jacq more, and I've even decided to go with two copies. If one of the advantages of Dragapult / Zoroark is its superior draw power compared to any other deck, then Jacq is the card that can best enhance this. I always feel that whenever I play Jacq at the beginning, the game progresses much better, while Brock’s Scouting doesn't offer much additional draw power — there are too many Pokémon to evolve and Brock only gives you one Evolution.

Dragapult / Zoroark's greater consistency means it takes the first Prize card in many matchups, so I usually end up using more Boss's Orders than Counter Catcher.

One Professor Turo's Scenario

Professor Turo's Scenario is that card you don't want to use, but you know you need to. In the current format, it's common for your opponent to try to lock one of your Pokémon in the Active Spot with Maractus or Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex, and your deck's target could be Reshiram or Hawlucha. But that's not the only reason Professor Turo is in the deck — there's also the mobility issue. Sometimes you need to open up a new slot on the Bench to put down an extra Zorua or Dreepy, or take that Dragapult ex or Zoroark ex that's taken a lot of damage off the field.

One Crispin  一个 Crispin

To power up your Dragapult ex, Zoroark ex, and Munkidori without any problems, you need Crispin, another Supporter you can only use if you have extensive draw power in your Abilities. There will be games where you will not need Crispin to attack, but whenever I do use Crispin, it becomes much easier to keep Energy on the board throughout the game. There are always unforeseen circumstances, and Crispin can correct a turn where you miss your attachment.

I mentioned above that I like to use three copies of Boss’s Orders because the deck can attack faster than a straight Dragapult deck, but there are matchups where the opponent will be more aggressive, and in these matchups only Counter Catcher can help you make a comeback. Against Raging Bolt and Joltik Box, it is the combination of Iono with Counter Catcher that will make you hit the right Pokémon while thinning the opponent’s hand to prevent the return KO.

Buddy-Buddy Poffin is a key Item to make this deck work because, except for Munkidori and Reshiram, all Basic Pokémon in the deck can be searched with it. Ultra Ball can search for any Pokémon, and this will obviously help bring you the Pokémon Poffin can't. My idea is to make a list with which you can evolve your Pokémon without depending on Items, so Ultra Ball would only be to correct something or complement it. Otherwise, Jacq, TM Evolution, and the natural draw power of Zoroark and Drakloak's Abilities are enough to consistently setup.

One Energy Search  One Energy 搜索

Here it is debatable whether to use Earthen Vessel or Energy Search. Each one has its pros and cons, but in this specific list I prefer Energy Search because you want to leave energy in the deck for Crispin. Another point is that, with 3-3 Zoroark ex, the tendency is for me to discard more cards than a typical Dragapult deck, and the additional discard effect of Earthen Vessel can be harmful.

Despite being a Dragapult deck, you will attack a lot with Zoroark just because on the second turn you will have the ability to do so, and dealing 170 damage on the second turn can be good. The problem is that every time you attach to Zoroark, you have stopped attaching to a Dragapult. A single N's PP Up helps alleviate this problem.

This is a fundamental card for the deck to function properly. I use Night Stretcher a lot to return Dragapult ex, Munkidori, Reshiram, and Energy.

Rescue Board helps a lot with Budew's attack on the first turn, and also helps to retreat N's Zoroark ex when the opponent brings it to the Active Spot.

As I said before, it's a complicated task to get the Energy needed to attack with Dragapult and Zoroark and still have Darkness Energy left for Munkidori, so the deck needs N's PP Up, Crispin, and especially Sparkling Crystal. All these Trainers help to fix a problem with Dragapult ex that has persisted throughout its existence, and N's Zoroark ex has the same problem.

Another Stadium that I would also like to use a second copy of — however, I believe that one copy is enough to solve a lot of problems. It is always important to use Stadium cards in this format to remove Jamming Tower, which otherwise stops Sparkling Crystal, but I also like to remove Spikemuth Gym in the matchup against Grimmsnarl ex.

A simple Boss’s Orders from your opponent on your N’s Zoroark ex can mean a turn without attacking if you don’t have N’s Castle or Professor Turo’s Scenario, and this worries me. N’s Castle gives free retreat to Zorua, Zoroark ex, and Reshiram, which is 40% of the deck.

Final Thoughts  最后的思考

If I were to play the World Championships with Dragapult ex, the variant would definitely be Dragapult / Zoroark. Dragapult with Dusknoir is the version that in theory gives you the best chance on average against everything, but I find it inconsistent, and it loses to straight Dragapult. Straight Dragapult ex is an incredible deck, but I don't like the matchup against Gardevoir ex. However, Dragapult / Zoroark has a similar metagame spread to straight Dragapult, has a better matchup against Gardevoir, and also has the element of surprise, as it is not a very popular variant yet. This deck isn't perfect because Raging Bolt is still one of the most popular decks in format, but it's still well worth considering.
