What’s up, Cut or Tap readers! I’m back with another piece; this time hopefully helping you guys prepare for the World Championships or get a head start on the 2026 season! I’ve been enjoying my time off, but recently have started the process of locking in for the biggest event of the year.

For those of you who have been following me throughout this season, you know that I’ve been in love with Dragapult ex. I played Regidrago Vstar a bunch early in the season, and went on what I consider to be a pretty good run with Dragapult Dusknoir to close out the season. Throughout my early Black Bolt/White Flare testing, I’ve tried a lot of new ideas – mainly, what new tools top decks from before gain from the expansion, and to no one’s surprise, I’m currently liking Drapgault ex the most. So that’s what I’ll be covering today – all things Dragapult ex for the 2025 World Championships (and early local events).

Today I will be covering two Dragapult ex variants: Dragapult/Dusknoir, and Straight Dragapult. I will be providing what I believe to be their best lists right now, and going on a deep dive of the variant I’ve been liking the most of the two, covering how it matches up against some of the best decks in the current format. There are other viable ways to utilize Dragapult ex (with Charizard ex, Zoroark ez, etc), but I have found those versions to fall short to the two former. I also feel the most qualified to speak on PultNoir and Straight Pult.

Dragapult ex/Dusknoir

You’ll notice that this is the same list as the one I played to get 11th at NAIC. I really believe this is close to the perfect 60 when it comes to Dragapult Dusknoir. This deck really only plays the essentials; there isn’t much room for more creativity when you need to fit Munkidori and a Dusknoir package.

While I believe this to be the best list currently, there are some other ways to build the deck that I don’t disagree with. To start, Hilda – this card is really good. A big part of how Dragapult loses games is missing the key step of setting up Drakloaks and promptly getting run over from there. Hilda being an out to not only Drakloak, but also an energy card, makes for a great consistency boost to push you through the game. Additionally, with it we would also have direct access to our Ace Spec, Neo Upper Energy. Although I don’t have it in the current list, I think the card is definitely worth looking into more.

The next card I want to talk about is Unfair Stamp. I played Stamp in all of my PultNoir lists up until NAIC, but it fell out of favor to NUE. Neo Upper allows for you to miss a turn of attachment and be fine, which is helpful against the aggressive decks, but Unfair Stamp also serves a good purpose against the aggressive decks. The game plan with PultNoir hasn’t really changed much over the past few months – Budew early, then set up your prize map with Dragapult and the ghosts. Unfair Stamp makes your Budew stage of the game SO much better. Aggressive decks will want to take early KOs to progress the game while you’re busy setting up, so they have to go through your Budew. With Unfair Stamp, you can counter this aggressive play in combination with Counter Catcher and another Itchy Pollen to put them in a really awkward position. The slight issue with Unfair Stamp in this list is that since there is only one Arven, we don’t really have a way to directly search it out. Now, the card will likely be beneficial in some way whenever you find it, but like said before, the key turn is when they are going after your early Budews. The draw engine for this deck is something I’m really passionate about; four Research is just so good, so I don’t know how we could fit another slot for Arven if we switched the Ace Specs. I think the design of the list is also why I’m hesitant against Hilda a bit; we’d just have tools that we can never search for.

Straight Dragapult ex

I’ve been really enjoying this list. The base of it is inspired by Tord’s NAIC list, but I’ve added some touches I think help a lot, namely Hilda and the 1-1 Dusclops line. I went over the advantages of Hilda before, but the Dusclops might be the PultNoir player in me talking. The plays that get unlocked when you play Dusclops get much better. Being able to activate your own Counter Catcher in some situations is huge, allowing for you to make more aggressive plays. Additionally, you just get more damage to play with, which always helps math.

The only thing I could see myself wanting is 4th Boss’s Orders or Jamming Tower from here. The cuts would probably just have to be the Dusclops line. As for why having more Boss is good, that’s self explanatory, but Jamming Tower gives us a Stadium, which is nice because we are lacking in that department right now. The Jamming Tower was pretty good, but I didn’t find myself using it enough in matchups to warrant the slot.

Comparing the Decks  比较套牌

Despite both being Dragapult decks that aim to win the game in two or three attacks, the decks are quite different when you consider their matchups. To start, Straight Pult is marginally more consistent than PultNoir. Additionally, Straight Pult has a better overall matchup spread. Now, when I say this, I mean that it is better into everything that isn’t Gardevoir. This may be concerning at first, but you have to consider how important it has been historically to beat Gardevoir if you want to win an event. This has been why I’ve chosen to play PultNoir for the past few events this season.

I touched on this before, but I tried to incorporate some of the game plans the PultNoir can execute by putting a 1-1 Dusclops into Straight Pult. Additionally, Straight Pult has some tricks that Pult Noir can’t do, namely Maractus. Maractus adds a whole extra layer of cool stuff you can do, and more important is an extra win condition that your opponent has to do their best to play around. I really underestimated this card when I first looked at Straight Pult lists. Lastly, Straight Pult just has more space in the deck. If I come up with other cool ideas for Dragapult, I am more likely to be able to fit them into Straight Pult.

For the above reasons, I am liking Straight Pult right now over Pult Noir. Both decks are incredibly strong, I just think Dragapult wants to play so many tools now, so having a 2-2-1 Dusknoir line in your deck feels detrimental.

This matchup is quite favored, which is nice considering how popular Raging Bolt is. It’s worth mentioning that there are two versions going around; one featuring Noctowl, and the other not. The non-Noctowl build just won Japan Nationals, but I believe that the version with Noctowl will still remain the more popular one. I mention this because whether or not they have owls will affect how you go about the matchup.

As most early games go with Pult, you’ll want to start with Budew while you establish board presence. You can also try to be cute with Maractus, as they often only play one or two switching outs (Prime Catcher and Iron Leaves). Honestly, utilizing Maractus at any stage during the game where you need to buy time is solid. Anyways, depending on how much pressure they are applying, I like to take it slow and split my energies on Drakloaks so I can ensure two Phantom Dives in a row over the next two turns. Sometimes if you are getting run over, you’ll have to rely on Neo Upper Energy to make up for lost tempo. Once you’ve got your first Pult attack ready, you need to consider how you’re taking six prizes from here.

Oftentimes this matchup is winnable within two Phantom Dives. Their Pokemon have the perfect HP for you to execute this. Most of their ex’s have 210, and their Basic support Pokemon have 70. In a perfect world, your six prizes are two of their ex’s and one of each of their Hoothoot and Fan Rotom. Having Hawlucha is really nice here, as it can give you the extra little damage boost to hit those numbers. A cute play that I will do sometimes is utilize my opponent’s Area Zero because Dragapult ex is a Tera Pokemon, and will use Hawlucha. Once my only Tera gets KO’d, I discard the Hawlucha on my bench so it is now able to be received with Night Stretcher. The win in two attacks involves swinging into two of their ex’s and then using bench damage to pick off their small guys. Sometimes you get the luxury of attack with Dragapult ex three times, in which case, you should always easily find six prize cards.

Another favorable matchup. In this one I usually have one goal in mind – make their deck mine, but just worse. This means targeting down their Snorunt/Froslass so they can’t farm free damage. Now if I am smart and don’t leave damage in play, their Munkidori become quite useless, and as mentioned before, we have the same deck – I just have the better attack.

You’ll want to start by using Budew early (shocker) while you build up a board. Swinging with Dragapult ASAP isn’t that bad, as they really don’t have an option to one-shot a clean Dragapult. Establishing your Munkidori will be important, as they will be going toe-to-toe with your opponent’s. As mentioned before, going after your opponent’s Froslass will be key in this matchup. From there you can pick off Munkidoris and begin to dissect their board.

In this matchup, it is sometimes good to just set up two Dragapult ex at the same time, because due to Froslass and Munkidori, your Drakloak that’s getting ready for battle might get picked off. This matchup is pretty easy if you don’t get run over.

Gardevoir   守卫

As said before, this is one of your harder matchups. If Gardevoir gets to do what it wants to, then you’re probably losing. However, there are a couple very reasonable ways to win this matchup, all of which involve you trying to be as annoying as possible to your opponent. Some things that we have going for us in this matchup now are that Gardevoir lists are sacrificing setup cards like TM:Evo and such to fit their Jellicent lines, and on top of that we can use Jellicent’s hefty attack cost to our advantage.

As with every matchup, use early Budew to hinder their Gardevoir setup and their ability to discard Psychic Energy easily. This gives us time to set up streamlined Dragapult ex attacks. The Dusclops is cool, because if they are really behind, you can pop it to activate your own Counter Catcher and wipe their board of Kirlia/Ralts, putting you ahead by a lot. This outcome I would consider a luxury, though.

The next cute thing you can do is string out their energies. If they choose to go in with Jellicent, they are needing to commit four energies to it, which is a lot. You can utilize Maractus to try to get them to dedicate more energy to unideal Pokemon, allowing you to build a game plan from there. Tangentially related, if they haven’t discarded energies well enough early on, you can gust up a Gardevoir ex and swing into it for 200 after they’ve used their first attack, hoping that moving it is a hassle and netting you free prizes.

The other thing worth mentioning in this matchup is how good of an attacker Bloodmoon Urslauna is. They don’t really have a super convenient way of KO’ing it if you manage your bench; they’d need three Munkidori set up for that to happen. Looping Ursaluna with your many Professor Turo’s is smart towards the end of the game.

The last thing I want to touch on is the potential techs again. Jamming Tower is decent against this deck if you find it early and can shut off TM:Evo. Iron Bundle is something cute for moving Jellicent, but I don’t think it’s worth the slot. This matchup is hard, but I don’t think that is a deterrent by any means.

Okay, folks – that is all for now. Both of the lists I’ve provided in this article have been tested a lot and I believe to be really strong into the current meta. The only real event we have seen so far is the Japan Championships, so there is still more meta to be developed, but I do think the Japan event is fairly accurate in showing what the expected meta is. What I like about Dragapult is how it provides so many options and ways to win any game; genuinely one of the best decks I’ve ever played. Looking forward from here, I will definitely continue to play these lists, but will also try to weave in some of the potential techs I mentioned earlier.
