General comments:

The paper was well-written and aims to address an interesting research question. My major concerns are summarized below, followed by specific comments.

- The paper is very long. I checked word count limits and the author guidelines state: “Manuscripts with original research should not normally exceed 9,000 words, including headings, references, footnotes and captions, but excluding the abstract. Papers that exceed the word count will be sent back to authors before being peer reviewed.” I used software to count so it may be inaccurate, but the count was >12,000 words. I strongly recommend shortening the paper.

- It is unclear in the paper why accelerating HRV recovery within 10 min of exercise cessation is relevant.

- It is unclear if the intervention has persisting effects or if HRV parameters revert to control values when slow breathing stops since there were no follow-up timepoints.

- There was no measure of mental or physical performance/recovery. Therefore, it is unclear if the enhanced HRV was meaningful to the sport practitioner.

- The lack of RSA recovery significance and unchanged mean HR suggest the mechanisms may be more complex than described.

- There seem to be issues with data normality

- The study may be more appropriate as a short “Research Note” style paper given the inadequate sample size and lack of outcomes beyond HRV (e.g., performance/recovery markers), and lack of follow-up time points after the intervention.

Introduction:  引言:

The intro provides too much general info and not enough specific info. For example, the intro does not sufficiently explain the importance or implications of accelerating HRV recovery within the first 10 min post-exercise. Does this influence performance? Does this influence psychological factors? Does this influence HRV status hours later or the next morning? Importantly, would the effects of slow breathing be transient? Would the increase in HRV from slow breathing after exercise persist after cessation, or does HRV revert to control levels? This is an important question that was not addressed in the study design.

The intro does not explain the physiological mechanisms that cause reduced HRV. For example, suppressed HRV is related to increased circulating catecholamines, lactate/metabolites, body temperature, fluid loss, etc. What is the physiological rationale for slow breathing post-exercise? Does it address any of these processes? Isn’t an elevated respiratory rate necessary to support O2 demand, CO2 removal, EPOC, etc.? Please clarify for the reader.

Pg. 19 L 45: If absolute HR wasn’t reduced by the intervention relative to control, it is questionable whether ANS recovery is actually being accelerated. Subsequent timepoints post-intervention, even if only 10 – 20 min, would’ve been helpful to address this.

Pg. 20 L 9: This raises questions about normality. Can you confirm that the residuals were normally distributed? Often, HRV parameters require Ln transformation. The data in Table 4 also suggest issues with the data (very large SD’s relative to mean, potential skewness).

Pg. 21 L 37: Is RSA a measure of vagal tone or vagal modulation?

Conclusion: “Given its potential to accelerate physiological and psychological recovery, controlled breathing presents a simple, cost-free tool for athletes and practitioners to optimize recovery from training and competitions” – This is a bit of a stretch given that the only outcomes were HR/HRV within 10 min of exercise. If HRV reverted to control levels when normal breathing resumed, than is slow breathing really affecting cardiac-ANS recovery in a meaningful way? If it is not accelerating lactate clearance, hydration, body cooling, etc., than I'm skeptical there would be persisting effects once the slow breathing stops. This would be worthy of investigation.
