Aside from being part of the PEAPs in CELE, reflection also allows you to recognise and clarify the important connections between what you already know and what you are learning. It helps you to become more active, aware and analytical with regard to your own learning, and this skill is highly valued at British universities. Reflection helps you to:

Make connections: reflection helps you develop and clarify the connections between what you already know and what you are learning, between theory and practice and between what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Examine your learning process: reflection encourages you to consider and comment on your learning experiences. It makes you think about both what you have learned and how you have learned it.

Clarify what you are learning: reflection helps you to understand what you have studied and enables you to compare and contrast new ideas with previous knowledge. It allows you to identify areas you still need to improve and highlights significant differences between your existing ideas and the expectations of academia in the UK. Reflection makes you more aware of how your ideas and behaviour have changed as a result of your experiences.

How are you expected to reflect?

Try to reflect regularly on significant events which relate to your academic studies at CELE but also more broadly to your education (we will refer to these as critical learning incidents1)

Make sure you are able to describe the incident(s) clearly, accurately and concisely

Analyse the incident. What was particularly important/interesting/useful/relevant about it for you?

Evaluate the significance of the incident. What have you learned from the experience, and how will it affect your future studies?

When other people are talking about their incidents, try to think about how these relate to your own experiences – listen carefully to what they are saying and compare and contrast their ideas with yours. Do this regularly to help develop your oral reflection skills.

It is very important that you consistently and systematically write down anything which you feel is important during your time at CELE. This could be related to an activity you have done in class, a conversation you have had with your language advisor or tutor, some feedback you have received on one of your submissions, a discussion with another student… anything which you feel has helped you to develop your knowledge, skills and/or confidence within the context of UK academic study.
